Camp Shady Cove: Rafting The Rogue

Today was rafting day at camp. We started off with a quick lunch and life vest check. Then we slathered on the sunscreen. Poppy and Elijah inflated the rafts and we went to Book-n-More to buy some extra oars we saw there yesterday for $3.00 each. We didn't want to miss out on these bargains since we had missed a great one yesterday at Bargains On The Rogue. They had a 6 man raft for only $130 by the time we got back there to buy it it had been sold to Harold. Lucky guy and what a frustration because he only put it on layaway which means he didn't even have the money to pay for it. While we who needed an extra raft for the next day had the money right then. We ended up running down to the sports store and buying a new one for twice that amount.

We put Poppy, Grandma, Stuart, and Adam in one boat and Elijah, myself, Leah and Aimee were in the other. We started at Elk Park. Elijah took the lead in our boat and kept us going in the right direction with good instructions. It was a great team effort with Aimee, Elijah, and I. Leah was not much help but she tried occasionally. Leah was a terrific water squirter and when we got too close to the boys and got blasted with water she retaliated nicely.

The best part of the trip is looking at the homes along the waters edge. Boy there are some nice ones. The white water is the most exciting and when we got into it we all held our oars up over our heads and whooped it up.

We ended up at the Upper Rogue River Regional Park. The trip was a short one today. Tomorrow we will start up higher at the hatchery and have lunch at Elk Park where we started today. We will also have 2 more campers with us. Beth and Ellie are driving up tonight to join us for a day.

The smells from the kitchen are so wonderful. Trout seasoned with Herbs De Provence from Butte Creek Mill, garlic olive oil and, dill. We also have seasoned potatoes and corn on the cob with warm sour dough bread. Cooking for a bunch of hungry campers is sometimes a challenge but the campers, if hungry enough, will gladly eat anything.
